5 typical desserts of Lipari: one for every occasion
Christmas
Every country, every region, every city has its own Christmas dessert. In the Aeolian Islands it’s not Christmas without
Nacatole: They are biscuits that have an external dough made of flour, lard, eggs, sugar and Malvasia wine. This pastry wraps a soft filling of almonds, sugar, lemon zest, cinnamon and mandarin juice. The characteristic of these desserts is the aspect: the pastry is decorated with the use of the “pizzicaruolo”, a kind of tweezers and razor blades to create real precious embroidery. It’s almost too beautiful to eat.
There is even a competition for who can create the most beautiful Nacatola!
Easter
- Cassatieddi: similar to Nacatole but with a different filling. A thin pastry, scented with Malvasia wine, it contains a filling of raisins, almonds, walnuts, sugar and cinnamon.
Carnival
Gigi o giggi: crunchy biscuits that remember traditional carnival fritters or Neapolitan struffoli but they differ in taste. What’s the secret? Not one but two secrets! Malvasia wine, the typical product of the Islands, is part of the dough. And, after frying them they are immersed in cooked wine. And like everything good (and fried!), they are like cherries, you can’t stop eating them.
Holydays Days
- Spicchitedda: They were also originally prepared for the Christmas holidays but, little by little, they turned into a year-round treat for every festive occasion. The dark color comes from the mixture of cooked wine, cinnamon, flour and sugar. Almonds are used as decorations.
Sesamini: the king of the 5 typical desserts of Lipari
Among the typical desserts of Lipari, one cannot fail to mention sesamini. These shortbread biscuits, flavoured with orange and coated in sesame seeds, are often enjoyed with a glass of Malvasia, the sweet wine produced on the Aeolian Islands.
You can surely find these delights in pastry shops and bakeries, alongside the classic cannoli, almond pastries, and Sicilian granitas. But these are just 5 typical desserts of Lipari, there are many others and you will have to come here to discover them all!
